Our Heritage

At a very early date in the history of the settlement of the Paisley district, that healthy spirit of a good challenge, which always characterizes the farming community, inspired the old settlers to organize an agricultural society.  Along with all the other very important duties the first council of Elderslie (which included Paisley) had to do in 1856 such as appointing a reeve, treasurer, auditors, passing by-laws to regulate the taverns and how the Lord’s Day was to be  observed, and applying for funds to improve roads and bridges, they recommended the  formation of an Agricultural Society. This was achieved in Paisley as early as 1856, just five years after the first settlers arrived in Paisley.

In 1956, a history was written by Mrs. Russell Cumming and Mrs. Chester Teeple about the first 100 years.  In 2006, the Agricultural Society celebrated their 150th Anniversary and Gail Fullerton researched and wrote a book covering the volunteers, activities and progress of the Society over all these years.   This book can be purchased for $10 at the fair.
